Cassava brown streak devastates gardens in Kiryadongo
Famers in Kiryadongo district are accounting losses following the outbreak of cassava brown streak disease that is devastating their gardens.
Sarah Kirya one of the cassava famers in the area says out of the 7 acres she planted, she only managed to earn 300,000 shillings, instead of the 5 million shillings she had expected.
According to the farmers, one of the signs of Cassava streak disease which is spread by whiteflies and propagation of infected cuttings , is rotting of the tubers, which makes it unfit for consumption.
Cassava is a significant staple food crop for many Ugandans; especially West Nile, Northern and Eastern Uganda.
