Mbarara : Police steps up operation to root out criminal gangs
Police in Mbarara district has stepped up the operation to root out a criminal gang that has been striking terror into the area and a few neighboring districts.
According to Mbarara District Police Commander (DPC) Jaffar Magyezi, five goons have so far been arrested and three others have been killed during operations.
Two guns were also recovered.
This follows the arrest on Wednesday last week of Hussein Guma, a corporal deserter from the army who was shot by cops from the Flying Squad Unit after he staged an offensive during his arrest, and he died shortly after reaching Mbarara Central Police Station.
At his residence in Katete cell, Nyamitanga division in Mbarara Municipality, police recovered several weapons including an AK-47 rifle, hammers, a motorcycle and army uniforms.
And using his phone, Magyezi said, police has been able to track his colleagues who have been terrorizing suburbs of Mbarara town, Sheema and Mitooma districts.
The armed robberies had been reported by the public from the beginning of March this year and in just a fortnight, three robberies had been made.
