Ibanda Water Day Celbrations: Ugandans challenged to ensure good sanitation and preserve the environ
As Uganda joined the world to commemorate World Water day today, here in Ibanda District, people have been challenged to ensure good sanitation in their families and preserve the environment so they can achieve the income status by 2020.
Ibanda Resident District Commissioner, Eliasto Akatuheebwa made the appeal while presiding over the celebrations that took place at Mushunga Primary School , in Mushunga Parish Ishongororo Sub – County , Ibanda North.
Being the worst performing parish on sanitation after Nyabuhikye Sub - County in the District, the RDC said Ishongororo Sub - County deserved the celebrations aiming at awakening and sensitizing them on proper ways of ensuring sanitation. He on this note called upon residents to construct improved latrines, plant trees, avoid bush burning and water contamination.
Speaking at the same event, the District Chairperson, Melichiadis Kajwengye said that since the government now spends little money on treating patients unlike previous years, there is need for money to be invested in Education hence asking them to maintain proper hygiene.
The celebration also marked the end of the sanitation week that has been ongoing in the District since 10th March 2018 and according to Deogratius Twinomujuni the Health Inspector attached to Ishongororo Health Centre IV, various activities like house to house inspection on health facilities like toilets have been done to ensure good health practices by the residents.
Meanwhile, in Kamwenge, at the district celebrations in Kamuganguzi Kanaara subcounty , Kitagwenda, the district Water officer, Annet Kobusingye Birungi noted with concern that only 82 percent of households have latrines whereas only 12% use bushes for convenience .
