Dr.Kaguna highlights the Health benefits of silver fish (mukene/Omena)
Most people prefer to choose red meat to white meat in their diet, mainly because they believe that they can get Health Benefits of Red Meat for Brain, Skin and Eyes. However, some might never know that red meat also contains more saturated fat than white meat, especially fish.
When it comes to fish, people will choose the big fish with thick fleshy part such as tuna and salmon. Whereas nutritionists agree that they are really good for your health since they provide sufficient proteins, vitamins and mineral with the low saturated fat, did you know that small fish like silver fish ,commonly known in Uganda as Mukene or Omena , can also give you the sufficient nutrition?
Doctor Amooti Kaguna of Afya clinic , in Ibanda ,explains that Silver fish comprises of fats, vitamin A and proteins which are good for a healthy body. He says unlike tilapia and Nile perch, silver fish is packed with amino acids that help in boosting body immunity. It’s vitamin A and E contents, he says maintain good vision especially for the elderly and children with eye problems.
It also helps in the maintenance of a smooth skin and healthy eye tissue besides being a source of omega-3 fatty acids that help to keep the heart functioning well.
While it helps accident victims in the quick recovery of their torn body tissues such as muscles, it is also healthy in preventing hypertension.
For children, Dr Kaguna recommends silver fish as a food for boosting memory to help them perform well in class since it contains phosphorous that promotes development of the brain.
