Army Worms Devastate Farmers in Rubanda

Army worms have invaded maize and sorghum gardens in Bufundi sub county, Rubanda district creating fears of food insecurity among the farmers in the area.

The most affected villages are Muruhinga, Musirwe, Butusi, Bushure, Rwaseyeza and Murandi.

Jenina Ainamani, one of the affected farmers from Bushure village says they have now started uprooting the sorghum gardens after the caterpillars proved resistant to insecticides.

When contacted, Rubanda district chairperson, Jogo Kenneth Biryabarema acknowledged the problem in Bufundi Sub County and that they have written to the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) requesting for herbicides to fight the pests.
