Mbarara municipal authorities block renovation works at Rwizi Arch Hotel
Mbarara municipal authorities, have blocked renovation works at Rwizi Arch Hotel located in Rwebikoona, along the Mbarara - Bushenyi road.
Part of the hotel, which lies in a low land, was damaged by floods, from Rwizi River last week.
The floods, also killed three people and destroyed more than five houses, in the area.
This week, the hotel management embarked on plans, to renovate part of the hotel that was destroyed by the flooding.
However, Mbarara Municipality resolved in an emergency meeting convened on Tuesday, to halt the proposed renovation works, until thorough investigations are made.
The meeting, was attended by Mbarara District Police Commander, Jaffar Magyezi, Resident District Commissioner, Captain Martha Asiimwe, District Internal Security Officer, Robert Nabimanya and Town Clerk Charles Lwanga, among others.
The meeting resolved that, the hotel will continue operating using the section that was not affected by floods, but no more expansion or renovation works should be done.
The Town Clerk, Charles Lwanga revealed that, a team has been put in place to investigate how the hotel was constructed, and whether or not, the expansion was approved by the municipal council.
Jeckonius Musiingwire, the Mbarara District Natural Resources Officer says, the Municipality ignored advice from the environmental department, asking them not to dare allow the construction, to proceed.
The hotel management, has not yet commented on the decision by the municipal authorities.
