Panic as unknown men kidnap LC chairman in Kakumiro

Unknown people claiming to be security operatives have kidnapped the LC II chairperson of Kyebando Parish in Kakumiro District.

Mr Joseph Wasswa was allegedly kidnapped from Kisengwe Trading Centre on Wednesday evening. According to eyewitnesses, the alleged kidnapers were dressed in civilian clothes, wore dark sun glasses and drove in a Saloon car.

How it happened Mr Tadeo Semato, Wasswa’s son, told Daily Monitor yesterday that the men came to his father’s home claiming to be looking for the chairperson of Kisengwe Trading Centre, Mr Fabiano Batakaramire. “I saw the men at home with my mzee (dad) as I was coming from the garden. They were putting on civilian clothes with sun glasses. My father exchanged telephone contacts with them and they later took him to Kisengwe Trading Centre but he has not been seen again,” Mr Semato said.

“The unknown men took my father to a bar from where they bought him drinks. They later forced him into their car claiming that they were taking him to a security meeting in Kasambya Trading Centre to prepare for the President’s visit next weekend,” he added. Mr Semato said his father later called home and told them he had been kidnapped and that he could not tell where he was.

Last contact “After about two hours, our father called home in panic to inform us that the men were driving him to an unknown place. They later switched off his phone and now we don’t know where he is,” he said. Following the incident, residents and family members filed a complaint of a missing person at Kisengwe Police Post.

Police speaks out When contacted, the district police commander, Mr Hassan Katumba Mugerwa, confirmed receipt of a complaint of a missing person. Cases of kidnap have been common, with the most recent being that of 28-year-old Susan Magara, whose abductors demanded a ransom of Shs700 million. They later killed her despite getting the ransom.
