Mudslide kills 7-year-old girl in Kisoro
Police in Kisoro district has confirmed that the body of a seven-year-old girl who went missing on Friday evening in a heavy downpour has been recovered, after a long search by locals.
Elly Maate kifgezi region police spokesperson confirms that the body of the minor, a daughter to Fred Mbarubukeye, a resident of Mwanjari-Lulembwe cell, in Nyarusiza Sub-County was recovered over the weekend ,in a garden of Irish Potatoes.
According to Mbarubukeye, the deceased in the company of other children had gone to collect firewood in when the downpour suddenly started.
Maate says the minor was swept off by running water and later killed by massive mudslides from Muhabuura Mountains.
The downpour that lasted for at least four hours also destroyed property, houses, schools and gardens of Irish potatoes, beans and sweet potatoes among other crops in the sub-counties of Nyarubuye, Muramba and Murora.
Kisoro District chairperson, Abel Bizimana, says that 56 residential houses were destroyed alongside a number of schools, among them, Kibugu and Ngunda Primary schools in Sooko parish, Muramba Sub County were.
Bizimana adds that the district is liaising with Uganda National Roads Authority(UNRA) to ensure that all the blocked roads are opened.
