Police fire live bullets and teargas to disperse rowdy Kyambogo University students
Police today used live bullets and teargas to disperse rowdy students at Kyambogo University who were protesting the postponement of the guild president elections that were slated for today.
Mildred Tibananuka , the Kyambogo University Dean of Students says the changes on the election calendar resulted from the delayed delivery of ballot papers.
According to a source, some angry candidates decided to mobilise their supporters to protest the abrupt decision to halt the elections.
Nine candidates are vying for election as guild president. One of the candidates; Frederick Okot said in a phone interview that police arrested two guild candidates and an unspecified number of students.
By press time, several students were still hiding in hostels in the nearby Banda Suburb in fear of being picked up by police.
Meanwhile, Andrew Mugarura, the Chief Security Officer Kyambogo University, said they are holding unspecified number of students at Jinja Road Police Station.
