NIRA embarks on birth and death registration program in south western Uganda

National identification registration authority (NIRA), with support from UNICEF, has embarked on a birth and death registration program in south western Uganda.

The Mbarara District Registration Officer , Paul Mugisha has explained that the purpose of the birth registration is to enable the government to have clear statistical data on number of birth and death, monitoring pattern and cause of death, fighting fraud and impersonation and ghosts, curbing crime and excess of service delivery.

He revealed this during the Mbarara district stake holders orientation meeting on birth and death registration program held at district council hall Kamukuzi.

The program is starting with sub counties of Rwanyamahembe in Kashari county, Bugamba sub county in Rwampara county and Kakoba division in Mbarara municipality.

Mugisha says under this exercise, only sub-county chiefs and town clerks are authorized to sign the document.

The requirements for registration are birth notification record, NIRA form, parents’ national identity card copy and national identity card of any applicant and payment receipt of 5,000 shillings.
