Napoli came within a whisker of progressing against RB Leipzig at the Red Bull Arena but goals from Piotr Zielinski and Lorenzo Insigne were not enough to overturn a 3-1 first-leg deficit as the Germans won on away goals.
Celtic also dropped out of the competition despite boasting a 1-0 first-leg lead against Zenit St Petersburg, who bounced back with a 3-0 win at the Krestovsky Stadium.
Roberto Mancini's charges are joined in the last 16 by fellow Russians Lokomotiv Moscow, who beat Nice 4-2 on aggregate, but Spartak Moscow suffered a 4-3 defeat over two legs to Athletic Bilbao.
