Self-styled Ankole King remanded to Kyamugorani government prison


The self-styled king of Ankole kingdom, Umar Asiimwe and his four ministers today appeared in court and were remanded to Kyamugorani government prison up to 27th of February,2018.

Asiimwe was arrested on Thursday last week alongside his cabinet ministers; Max Muhumuza, Joseph Kankiriho, Brenda Katushemerirwe and Wycliff Amanya.

Appearing before Mbarara grade one magistrate; Sanyu Mukasa, the 5 were charged with 7 counts of inciting violence, promoting sectarianism and impersonation among others.

In her ruling, magistrate Mukasa turned down their bail application.

She concurred with state Attorney Caroline Kesubi that the sureties reside in different districts from the suspects and may not compel them to appear in court as required.

She however, adjourned the case in order to first investigate thoroughly before court can pronounce it self on the matter.
