Ibanda Environment Officer in Trouble For Cutting Down a Historical Tree
The Ibanda District Environment Officer, Tom Nuwagira is likely to face the District Disciplinary Committee over alleged disrespect and destroying the environment after he reportedly sold off a historical tree planted at the district headquarters by former president, Idi Amin Dada.
On 23rd , December, 2017 , Tom Nuwagira reportedly hired casual labourers to cut down the tree for timber which he sold to one business man only identified as Edward at only 200,000= , something leaders say is embarrassing as well as a sign of disrespect since he never sought permission from the top district leadership.
Speaking to our reporter, Melichiades Kajwengye, the chairperson LC5 Ibanda District said that he is engaging the office of the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) to ensure that the officer in question explains the motive of his action.
He says that it is unfortunate that instead of planting more trees in the compound, he went ahead to cut down a historical tree treasured by the district leadership and people of Ibanda.
The district Chief Administrative Officer, Robert Abenaitwe said that they are working tirelesslky to see to it that Tom Nuwagira explains his motive.
He said that it is unfortunate that the person tasked with the responsibility of protecting the environment is the one turning around to behave irresponsibly.
When contacted, Tom Nuwagira however , said that the tree was planted in a wrong place and that he had to cut it down in order to create more space for the District Parking Yard.
