High Court to Rule on Another Age Limit Case Today
The High court is today morning expected to deliver a ruling in which a city advocate seeks orders stopping parliament from proceeding to amend A(102) b of the Constitution without first translating the Constitution in local languages.
Jackson Ntwatwa of Asinguza and Company advocates claims its the duty of government as per Article( 4 )of the constitution to translate the Constitution which is only written in English to local languages which can easily be read , understood and interpreted by all citizens before government tampers to amend any provision or article.
Therefore Ntwata contends that the act of only 436 MPs sitting and deciding on behalf of 37 million Ugandans to lift the presidential term limit is unlawful and must be halted.
However Ntwatwa’s hopes of stopping Parliament yesterday from debating on the contentious issue did not manifest as the presiding Assistant Registrar, Joy Kabagye was not ready with the ruling and adjourned it to today.
Parliament resumes today for the age limit debate to continue after MPs complained about microphones not working well yesterday, forcing the speaker to adjourn the house.
Earlier in the day(On Monday), the Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga suspended six Members of Parliament over indiscipline as Chaos broke out after Parliament proceedings were briefly interrupted by plain clothed men who reportedly entered the chambers. The speaker, Rebbecca Kadaga however insisted they were her body guards as Opposition MPs turned rowdy and started singing the national anthem while others refused to take their seats on the directive of the Speaker.
Those suspended include; Ntungamo Municpality MPGerald Karuhanga, Erute South MP Jonathan Odur, KiiraMunicipality’s Ibrahim Ssemujju and Allan Sewanyana of Makindye West.Others include Kawempe South MP Mubarak Munyagwa and Kilak North’s Anthony Akol.
The suspended MPs will miss seven sittings.
